I stumbled into PEP.ph’s article on Gawad Urian’s Ten Best Films of the Decade (2000-2009). Here’s a quick rundown:
1. Babae sa Breakwater (2003)
2. Batang Westside (2001)
3. Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino (2004)
4. Kinatay (2009)
5. Kubrador (2006)
6. Lola (2009)
7. Magnifico (2003)
8. Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (2005)
9. Serbis (2008)
10. Tuhog (2000)
I’ve only watched 4 (Kubrador, Ang Pagdadalaga…, Serbis, & Tuhog) out of the 10 in the list and I’d say Jeturian’s Tuhog tops my list. What’s interesting to note that most if not all are indie movies. It’s like saying the best movies created in the last decade were all indie movies. Two things: Are mainstream producers not producing great cinematic opuses, or are critics now purists (indie movies are the best?)? Honestly, I am not a big fan of indie movies because the movie experience is usually not good. I love great cinematic experiences — amazing cinematography, clear picture, crisp sound, etc. Story-wise, the lack of mainstream producer’s meddling for commercialization creates an exquisite storyline. Kubrador was a gripping story with an amazing characterization of Gina Pareno. Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros was just poignant.
Anyway, I’ve thought of grabbing copies of Filipino movies that are considered gems. Itim, Oro Plata, Mata, Himala, Jaguar, Insiang, Oropronobis, Temptation Island. Let’s see if I can find them, and if I find the drive to actually watch them.
